Reminiscence & Oral History

Between September 2017 – May 2018, the Shirley Local History Group ran a series of Memory Lane reminiscence workshops at which people were invited to share their own memories of Shirley.  Many fascinating conversations were had over a cup of tea in the ParkLife Community Room!

Topics included:

  • Shops & Shopkeepers in Shirley
  • Southampton Trams
  • The Children’s Hospital in Winchester Road
  • Well known Shirley Buildings & Landmarks
  • Local family links – including links to the St.James’ Church First World War ‘Book of Honour’

This led to a small Memory Lane Exhibition which was held on a heritage bus at the Summer Fair in St.James’ Park in July 2019. Stories of travelling on local buses were also shared with our volunteers during the event!

We also have a number of trained Oral Historians in the Research Group and are always keen to find people who would like to have their memories recorded.  This builds on the work done during the Shirley Heritage Project when collecting oral histories was integral to the success of the project.

Although we are currently unable to schedule any further Memory Lane sessions or Oral History Interviews we hope to do so in the near future.  In the meantime, you might like to read our Memory Lane Newsletters and drop us a line if you have any of your own memories of Shirley that you would like to share with us history@fosjp.org.uk.
