Shirley Heritage Project – Autumn 2015 Public History Talk #1

Shirley Heritage Project – Autumn 2015 Public History Talk #1
“John Claudius Loudon”
Speaker: John Avery

JC Loudon was a famous botanist, magazine editor, garden designer, and cemetery designer, who visited Southampton and Shirley in the 19th Century.

This illustrated talk was well‑attended and very interesting. John C Loudon led a short, but full life, primarily as a garden magazine editor, and a landscape designer of both gardens and cemeteries. Although misfortune struck at the end of his life, he had many friends including Charles Dickens, who cleared his substantial debt after his death.
