St James’ Park pipped other areas in the city to take the inaugural top place in the Southampton Open Spaces Award scheme backed by the City of Southampton Society and theSouthampton Common and Parks Protection Society(SCAPPS) and sponsored by Linden Homes.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled by the mayor, John Slade, on 7th September 2006. Arthur Jeffrey, chairman of SCAPPS said:

“The Friends of St.James’ Park have stimulated a great community spirit here in this park and the judges acknowledge their efforts and wish them every success with their future plans.”
