A BBC Breathing Places Event

On a hot sunny day in May, a crowd of volunteers, young and not quite as young, helped to prepare and plant a Local Floral Nature Reserve on the South-facing bank of the Park, with expert help from the Southampton City Council Parks and Open Spaces Team.

Having dug up and raked over part of the banks by Winchester Road, we scattered wildflower seed and planted a collection of plants native to the SO15 area, such as:

  • Buttercups
  • Cowslips
  • Ox-Eye Daisies
  • St.John’s Wort
  • …and many others

As well as the enhanced visual effect, we hope that these plants will help encourage insects, birds, and bats within the Park. We plan to add more plants in the Autumn.

Visit our Wildflower Guide to find out more about these plants, and when you might expect to see them flowering in the Park – and to see how our Local Floral Nature Reserve progressed.

Many thanks to all who turned up to help us on the day!

The Local Floral Nature Reserve was just one of several improvements planned to turn the Park into an official BBC Breathing Place in line with the award that FoSJP won in 2007. Other changes in the Park included bird and bat boxes, and new signage showing the variety of flora and fauna in the Park. See our Nature in the Park page for more information.
